Allergies Q&A

What are allergies?

Allergies occur when the immune system overreacts to substances that are generally harmless. When exposed to an allergen, the body releases histamines, which trigger various symptoms.

Common allergy triggers include:

  • Environmental allergens: Dust, pollen, mold, pet dander
  • Insect bites & stings: Bees, wasps, mosquitoes
  • Irritants: Smoke, perfumes, soaps, and household chemicals
  • Food allergies: Dairy, nuts, eggs, and other common ingredients
  • Medications & vaccines: Some children react to certain ingredients in medications or vaccines

What are the symptoms of allergies?

Allergy symptoms vary depending on the trigger and your child’s individual response.

Common allergy symptoms include:

  • Respiratory issues: Sneezing, coughing, runny nose, watery eyes
  • Skin reactions: Itchiness, rashes, hives, or eczema flare-ups
  • Digestive issues: Nausea, stomach pain, diarrhea (common with food allergies)

Some allergic reactions are mild and occasional, while others can be chronic or severe.

What is anaphylaxis?

Anaphylaxis is a life-threatening allergic reaction that requires immediate medical attention. Symptoms include:

  • Severe swelling in the throat
  • Shortness of breath
  • Hives or intense skin reactions

Without prompt treatment, anaphylaxis can lead to serious complications. If your child has a known severe allergy, carrying an epinephrine auto-injector (EpiPen®) may be necessary.

How are allergies diagnosed?

At Westside Pediatrics, we provide allergy consultation to determine the cause of your child’s symptoms.

  • We review personal and family medical history
  • We perform a physical exam to assess allergy-related symptoms
  • Additional allergy tests (such as skin or blood tests) may be recommended
